Device Certification

The Importance of Device Certification
Device Certification is a set of tests that demonstrate a device operates properly when connected to a wireless network. Because North American network operators have evolved quickly by acquisition and integration of multiple networks, it is very important that your devices are tested and approved before commercial use on the KORE Telematics network.

This is particularly important as the operators themselves migrate to an increasing use of 850MHz services, away from the ‘1900MHz only’ rule that applied until recently. Many users of non-approved devices are finding themselves in the unfortunate position that their systems can stop working, from one day to the next. But there are several smaller, but no less important matters that can arise with non-approved devices.

KORE can help you in this process, both through its processes, and its formal relationships with OEM’s, operators and even test houses. As a full member of the industry control body, the PCS Type Certification Review Board (PTCRB), we have intimate knowledge of these often complex processes.

Certification needs generally fall into three areas:

  1. FCC Part 15
  2. PTCRB (PCS Type Certification Review Board) - GSM Devices
  3. Operator Level – GSM and CDMA providers

Device Certification is required for both new Modules and Devices as well as whenever changes are made to an approved Module or Device. The actual time and cost required to complete certification will vary depending upon the specific approval requirements.

The fastest, and often the most cost-effective, Device Certification strategy is to not have to go through the process at all.

‘Always use a Pre-approved Device unless there is a compelling reason to build a new one.’

If a new End Device is required, make sure a Pre-approved Module is used in the design. Information on these and other ‘ready to wear’ devices is available here:

Device Certification Benefits
M2M Modules and End Devices are used in applications where the expected life cycle is considerably longer than that for a handset or PDA. Once a Device is installed, it is expensive and time-consuming to replace or service. The goal of Device Certification is to head off operational issues before a Module or End Device is commercially deployed, resulting in reduced field issues and related costs, Maximum device performance and Minimum risk of service disruptions due to ‘unsatisfactory’ network behavior

How can KORE help?
